The best little guesthouse in Mexico!

The Art of Casa de Colores

Enter through our whimsical entrance to a sumptuous hacienda of yesteryear.

The room embraces you with its deep red walls and the warmth of the hand-beaten copper lamps, which spread their shine over the exotic Mexican woods and colorful folk art.

The exquisite credenza, made of native exotic katalox, as well as most of the guest house's other fine wood furniture, were created by Guanajuato artisan Alejandro Vázquez.

If you look closely at the whimsical, hand-carved folk art painting, you will see not only “Los viejitos” from Michoacán, but also famous Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, as well as the hotel's owners: Peter and Mary .

Be sure to examine the fine detail of the Catrina charra in the niche. We call it Lucha Villa, in honor of one of the most famous singers and actresses in Mexico. This work was created by Javier Espinosa from Capula, Michoacán, perhaps the most famous Catrina artist in all of Mexico.

And don't forget to take a photo with the bar hostess, Tza Tza L'Amor. She is the first Catrina of that size in solid wood, created by artist Guadalupe Navarro and her daughter Marisol from Cuanajo, Michoacán.

Relax in the traditional equipal-style leather and wood furniture of the town of Zacoalco de Torres, Jalisco. Then, before retiring to your room, explore additional options for cozy sitting areas.

If you prefer more privacy, sink into the loveseat or oversized chair in the adjacent room, where conversation can be more private.

And don't miss the collection of Guatemalan animal masks, purchased in an indigenous village in the mountains surrounding Lake Atitlán.

The large portrait, a rendition of Don Quixote, illuminated by hand-blown lamps, is also worth your attention. If you are cold, you can borrow a serape from under the side benches.

Be sure to take the time to fully appreciate the table we lovingly refer to as Monkey Butt and his other tule animal friends.

For morning coffee, afternoon relaxation, or evening cigars and a glass of wine or fine tequila, climb the spiral staircase to the rooftop patio with its handcrafted cast iron furniture from the town of Tzurumutaro, Michoacán. Even if you're not in one of the upstairs suites, walk upstairs to appreciate the folk art and the delicate hand-blown glass chandelier above the staircase.

The beautiful macrame window curtain and exquisite macrame art on the adjacent wall were created by Guanajuato artist and nationally renowned mime artist, Miguel Rodríguez - Mimo Michelle.

The hand-carved and painted folk art painting of the University and the Basilica of Guanajuato comes from a photograph taken by one of the owners from the patio of the Hotelito Casa Dionisio (the second best guest house in Guanajuato) and then transferred to a painting carved by Guadalupe Navarro from Cuanajo, Michoacán.
